Asen I, Ivan

The Monument of the Asens at Veliko Tarnovo (Bulgaria) by Krum Damyanov was dedicated in 1985 to the 800 years anniversary of the rebellion against Byzantine rule, which ended with the liberation of Bulgaria. The composition represents the leaders of the revolt – the brothers Ivan Asen I, Petar IV (Teodor Asen) and Kaloyan and one of their successors Ivan Assen II, son of Ivan Asen I. They were the most glorious tsars of the Asen dynasty (1185-1280). During their rule Bulgaria reached high political, economic and cultural prosperity.
