Lee, Robert Edward

The statue was commissioned and positioned by a private individual on private land adjacent to the battlefield without the approval of the local community, or the NPS. The statue of Lee is positioned in an area controlled by the Union rather than the Confederacy during the battle. In addition, Lee is known to have traveled to Sharpsburg by ambulance due to a broken wrist, rather than by horseback, as depicted by the statue.
