Makonnen, Ras

In the mid 1950s, Croatian sculptors Antun Augustinčić & Frano Kršinić worked with Ethiopian artist Afewerk Tekle to forge in Yugoslavia an equestrian statue of Ras Makonnen, the father of the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I. In 1958, the statue was placed in the center of the city of Harar, Ethiopia. However, this statue was recently torn down and destroyed back in June of 2020 during the continuing unrest spreading across Ethiopia.
