(1856 –1920) was a Somali religious and patriotic leader, referred to as the ‘Mad Mullah’ by the British. He established the Dervish State in Somalia that fought the 20 year Somaliland Campaign against British, Italian and Ethiopian forces. There is a lot of dispute about the erection of a copy of the Mogadishu statue in Jigjiga (Ethiopia) because of his controversial reputation.
Statue in Mogadishu (snk) Following the collapse of the local government in 1991, the statue should have been destroyed by looters and its parts sold as scrap metal.
