Barrios, Gerardo

(1813–1865), who was president of the country between 1859 and 1863. He was a liberal and supported a federation of Central American states. A conflict with the conservatives, and in particular with the clergy, ended with a trial and his execution. In 1910 he was officially granted the title of ‘national hero’.
