Barrios, José Maria Reyna

(1854–1898), President of Guatemala from 1892. He was a moderate liberal, who solidified the less controversial reforms of Justo Rufino Barrios. The power of the landowners over the rural peasantry increased during his presidency. José Barrios was assassinated in 1898.
