Carranza de la Garza, Venustiano

(1859 –1920) was one of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution. He ultimately became President of Mexico following the overthrow of the dictatorial Victoriano Huerta regime in the summer of 1914. During his administration the current constitution of Mexico was drafted. He was assassinated near the end of his term of office at the behest of army generals resentful at his insistence that his successor be a civilian. Although for most of the time period between 1915 and 1920 he was more powerful than any of the other revolutionaries, he is today probably the least remembered of them. Historians point out Obregón’s tactical brilliance and rise to power in the 1920s, Villa’s legendary bravery, flair, style and leadership and Zapata’s unwavering idealism and vision. Carranza had none of these.
