(1199-1252) king of Castile and León masterminded the most expansive campaign of the Reconquista. By military and diplomatic effort, Ferdinand III vastly expanded the dominions of Castile into southern Spain, annexing many of the great old cities of Al-Andalus, including the old Andalusian capitals of Córdoba and Sevilla and establishing the boundaries of the Castilian state for the next two centuries. He is also known as San Fernando Rey as Pope Clement X canonized him in 1671.
