The statue shows the young hero, killed at the battle of Combrai in 1917, as the epitome of the honorable Englishman, a veritable Sir Galahad, bareheaded and noble, sitting calmly on his charger facing his maker. The horse, head solemnly bowed and ears pricked, stands at ease, with near hind resting, as though patiently waiting.

(1878 – 1959) was known as one of England’s finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken critic of Modernism.
After the war, Munnings began to establish himself as a sculptor, although he had no formal training in the discipline. His first public work was the equestrian statue of Edward Horner in Mells, Somerset,
