known in Russian as Pyotr Karlovich Klodt, was the favourite sculptor of Nicholas I, whose equestrian statue he made. Legend has it that Nicholas I remarked to Klodt that he ‘creates horses finer than any prize stallion does’.

Strictly speaking these sculptures are not equestrians, as the men taming the horses are not riding them, but they should be mentioned, as they are unique and outstanding examples of sculptured combinations of man and horse.
