(1801–1859) is remembered for his military campaigns during the revolutions of 1848 and for his abolition of serfdom in Croatia. His reputation is different in Austria (where he was regarded as a rebel, seeking to break up the Austrian Empire), in Croatia (where he is a national hero) and in Hungary (where he is seen as a traitor to the Hungarian revolution for independence).

He rediscovered Baroque sculpture and used it as the basis for his equestrian statues
His statue in Zagreb was removed by the Communists in 1947 and reinstalled in 1990, this time not pointing his sword north towards Hungary, but instead facing south.
