Bud Neil (1911-1970) became famous in Glasgow during the 1950s and 60s for his character “Lobey Doser”, a cartoon strip serialised in the Evening Times for many years. This was the story of a wild west sherriff from deepest Partick who chases the evil villain Rank Bajin on his trusty two -legged steed El Fideldo. The characters became firm favourites with the people of Glasgow.
The most enduring symbol of the affection felt for his work is the bronze statue of Lobey Dosser in Woodlands Road, facing the Halt Bar. Riding the ever faithful Fideldo, and with the scowling Rank Bajin under arrest, the statue is a memorial to Bud Neil as well as commemorating his most popular creation. The sculpture was erected in 1992 and was paid for by public subscription by the patrons of the nearby Halt Bar. Rather than a soldier or politician, this monument recalls the life and work of an artist, whose contribution to society was through his marvelous artworks.
