(1638-1715), known as the Sun King reigned from 1643 to his death in 1715. His reign began at the age of four and lasted seventy-two years. As such, it is one of the longest documented reigns of any European monarch.

Description:

The statue by Martin Desjardins of Louis XIV in Paris by Martin Desjardins in the Place des Victoires, which was redesigned for the occasion to create a suitable setting for the works was one of those statues melted down during the revolution. A marble workshop copy of the statue in the orangerie of the Palace of Versailles is all that is left of it. A new statue of Louis XIV by Francois Joseph Bosio replaced it in 1828. The monument of Philip IV by Pietro Tacca in Madrid was clearly the inspiration for this statue, which represents the Sun King as a Roman emperor on a rearing horse. The statue was restored in 2005.
