(1855–1902), a Portuguese cavalry officer, ‘pacified’ Mozambique. Highly respected in Portuguese society of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he was seen as the hope and symbol of the reaction to threats from other European empires against Portuguese interests in Africa. He was governor of Mozambique until 1898, when he returned to Portugal.

Description:
This statue, originally erected on one of the main squares of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), was toppled in 1975. The statue can now be seen in a Maputo’s Fortress, being the resting place for the former Portuguese heroes.
