Outram, James

(1803 –1863) was an English general who fought in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. It was said of him at that time that ‘a fox is a fool and a lion a coward by his side’. In February 1858, he received the special thanks of both houses of Parliament, and in the same year the dignity of baronet. Because of his reputation for chivalry his grave in Westminster Abbey bears the epitaph ‘The Bayard of India’, after the 16^th century French soldier Pierre Terrail, Seigneur de Bayard.
