(1842– 1916) was the commander-in-chief of the Japanese armies in Manchuria. After Japan’s victory, Emperor Meiji elevated him to the rank of prince. As the war minister in several cabinets and as the chief of the army general staff, Ōyama upheld the autocratic power of the oligarchs against democratic movements.
