(1645-1703) According to legend, she organized resistance against the Duke of Savoy who invaded with his army the Dauphiné province and heading an army of peasants she freed the region. On her role, historians have debated for more than a century. According to some of them, she headed only a band of looters who often came here “to collect contributions from citizens of local towns and villages”. Nevertheless she was known in the 19th century as the ‘Jeanne d’Arc du Dauphiné’.
