more commonly known as Stephen the Great (1433–1504), was Prince of the Principality of Moldavia between 1457 and 1504. During his reign, he strengthened Moldavia and maintained its independence against the ambitions of Hungary, Poland and the Ottoman Empire, which all sought to subdue his land. Stephen achieved fame in Europe for his long resistance against the Ottomans. He was victorious in 46 of his 48 battles, and was one of the first to achieve a decisive victory over the Ottomans, at the Battle of Vaslui, after which Pope Sixtus IV deemed him verus christianae fidei athleta (true Champion of the Christian Faith).

(1824–1910) was born in Paris into a family with close ties to the art world. He received his formal training in art at the age of five at a private school in Paris and was accepted at the prestigious Ecole des art Decoratifs at the age of thirteen. He devoted himself right from the start to being a sculptor of animals; an animalier. He is famous for his equestrian statue of Jeanne d’Arc in Paris.
