(743 – 807) was leader of the Saxon people and adversary of Charles the Great during the Saxon wars (772 – 804). The outcome of these wars was that Saxony was added to the Franconian territory and that the pagan Saxons were converted to Christianity. Widukind became a legendary figure and the symbol of Saxon independence
