1810-1842), Duke of Orleans and Prince Royal was the eldest son of the last king in France, Louis Philippe, King of the French. The Prince Royal played an important role in the conquest and occupation of Algeria. He was killed in an accident on his way to his family in Neuilly-sur-Seine

As the creator of seven equestrian statues,Carlo Marochetti (1805 – 1867) was one of the most productive sculptors . He was born in Turin (Italy), brought up in Paris and studied in Rome. He remained in France until 1848, and then moved to London. Marochetti was not only a very productive artist, but also a gifted one. He created some marvellous equestrian statues.

The statue of Ferdinand, originally erected in Algeria, was sent back to France when Algeria became independent. It now stands in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
This replica of the statue was placed in Paris, from where it was removed after the 1848 revolution to Versailles. There it stood without a pedestal in the court of the Petite Orangerie, until it was moved to its present location in Eu in 1971.
