For Barcelona, Marès composed a sculptural group where he shows a woman sitting on a horse holding a ship over her head. Hermes, the god of commerce, holds the reins of the horse with one hand while carrying a gear in the other hand. Thus, Marès allegorically represents navigation, commerce and industry as the main driving forces of the city.

Most of the sculptures on the Plaça de Catalunya were created between 1927 and 1929 for the Barcelona International Exposition of 1929. Among all the sculptures we find four allegories representing the four Catalan provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona. Frederic Marés was a sculptor who had great recognition among the institutions of the time. He was commissioned to make two sculptures for the square, Emporiom and Barcelona.
