Alexander Phimister Proctor was an American sculptor with a reputation as one of the nation’s foremost animaliers. He is possibly best known for the horse ridden by Sherman in the Grand Army Plaza in New York. His Broncho Buster, in Denver (1922), is a spectacular sculpture of a wild bucking horse standing on its forelegs, its hind legs high in the air. It is said that while Proctor was sculpting the composition, his cowboy model was arrested on a charge of murder. Proctor appealed to the sheriff, who allowed the accused murderer to continue to pose until Proctor had finished the piece.
