Alexander the Great

‘Macedonian Equestrian Revolutionary’ is the official name of this statue. Alexander the Great by Valentina Karanfilova-Stevanovska (2011), more a fairground attraction than a decent equestrian statue.

Much has already been written about this monument and it is indeed ‘over the top’. The pedestal is a ten metre high column, surrounded by a kitsch fountain with sound and changing colours and with huge bronze lions and warriors. The column is topped by a round platform, from which water also flows. The actual sculpture is more than 14 metres high and depicts a rearing stallion ridden by Alexander the Great. Seeing all of this, I had associations with Las Vegas, others understandably with Disneyland. A revolving platform would have completed the picture!
