was ruler of a Bulgar kingdom in the second half of the 7th century and is credited with the establishment of the First Bulgarian Empire. The Byzantine Empire had to recognize the sovereignty of Asparuh’s Kanate in 681 after the Bulgarian victory over the Byzantines in the Battle of Ongala This is usually regarded as the year of establishment of Bulgaria.

The monument was the result of traditionally good relations between Bulgaria and Mongolia and their common genealogical roots. The monument was realized in Ulan Bataar (Mongolia) by a sculptor group consisting of Khainzan Ganbat, Darisuren Sanchir, Vatzhargal Enkhzol and Tsendzhav Enkhbat.
