Carol I

This equestrian statue by Florin Codre in Bucharest replaced the one by Ivan Mestrovic, which had been erected in 1930 and melted down by the communists in 1948 to build a statue for Lenin. The unveiling of the Florin Codre statue resulted in much dispute, focusing on the question of whether it was plagiarism, a bad copy of the Mestrovic sculpture or a new and original work.

The equestrian statue of Carol I in Calarasi was unveiled three years before this one in Bucharest. As the statue in Cal;arasi is only slightly different it may be supposed that it was a try out for the Bucharest one.
