(1804 – 1873) moved to Geneva after the war between France and Germany broke out. He died in the Beau-Rivage Hotel in 1873 and left his considerable wealth to the city, which, at his request, constructed the Brunswick Monument to his memory inspired by (and so more or less a replica of) the Scaliger Tombs in Verona, Italy. The mausoleum was built in 1879.
