(1528–1580), also known as “Ironhead”, was Duke of Savoy from 1553 to 1580. He is remembered for the Italianization of the House of Savoy, as he recovered the savoyard state (invaded and occupied by France when he was a child) following the Battle of St. Quentin (1557) and subsequently moved the capital to Turin and made Italian the official language in Piedmont.
- Sculptor(s):Marochetti, Carlo
This was the first equestrian statue by Marochetti (1838), and it made his reputation for this kind of work. The statue, a skilfully executed historical likeness, shows the sixteenth-century hero in the act of sheathing his sword while controlling his lively horse.
