(1808-1863) was the last Danish king to rule as an absolute monarch. He signed a constitution that established the Danish parliament and transformed the country into a constitutional monarchy.

Herman Bissen designed the statue that stands in front of the Christiansborg Palace on the island of Slotsholmen in Copenhagen. His son Vilhelm (the sculptor of the Absalon statue) completed the statue in 1873 after his father’s death.
