(1819–1904), grandson of George III, served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Armed Forces from 1856 to 1895. He became Duke of Cambridge in 1850. This title fell into disuse until recently, when Queen Elizabeth II awarded the title in 2011 to her grandson William on the day, he married Catherine Middleton. Prince George was made a Field Marshal in 1862.

(1845 –1938) was an English sculptor and painter who specialized in animals, particularly horses. He created the sculpture Peace descending on the Quadriga of War, on top of the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner in London. Before becoming a full-time artist, he was an army veterinary surgeon.

The equestrian statue of George shows a flamboyant Duke of Cambridge, suitably mounted on a magnificent charger, champing at the bit with flowing mane and tail. It is somewhat ironic that the statue is positioned outside the front door of the War Office on Whitehall in London, an institution that George strongly resisted.
