(1788-1847) was one of the leaders of a Republican uprising, the so-called Ragamuffin War with as goal the secession of Rio Grande do Sul. Giuseppe Garibaldi and David Canaberro (see hereafter) were his companions in arms. The rebels surrendered to imperial forces in 1845.
