(1860 –1908), also known as 1st Marquess of Linlithgow was a Scottish aristocrat, politician and colonial administrator. He is best known for his brief and controversial tenure as the first Governor-General of Australia. His appointment as Governor reflected the change in the role of Governor from public servant and administrator in the early years of the colony, to the representative of the constitutional monarchy by the end of the nineteenth century. When he became Governor-General, he was 40 years old and he remains the youngest person to have held that office; he is also the shortest-lived, dying at the age of 47.
