Karposh’s rebellion was a Christian anti-Ottoman uprising in the Central Balkans that took place in 1689, encouraged by Emperor Leopold I of Austria, who accorded Karposh the title King of Kumanovo, together with a ceremonial helmet. After fierce battles, the Ottomans took Kriva Palanka, the rebel stronghold, and Kumanov. Karposh was captured, taken to Skopje, and cruelly put to death on the Stone Bridge over the Vardar.
