(1847–1895) entered the Buddhist priesthood and served as an abbot in Edo. Following the Meiji Restoration, in 1873, Emperor Meiji recalled all imperial princes serving as Buddhist priests back to secular status. During the invasion of Taiwan, Yoshihisa contracted malaria and died, thus being known as the first member of the Japanese imperial family to have died outside of Japan, and the first (in modern times) to have died in war.
