Two equestrian statues showing Kumagai Naozane (1141–c. 1208), a famous soldier who served the Minamoto clan, and Taira no Atsumori (1169–1184), a samurai famous for his early death. At the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani, Atsumori engaged Naozane in lone combat and was killed. Naozane had a son the same age as Atsumori. His great remorse, as told in tales, coupled with his taking of priestly vows, caused this otherwise unremarkable event to become well known for its tragedy.
