(1638-1715), known as the Sun King reigned from 1643 to his death in 1715. His reign began at the age of four and lasted seventy-two years. As such, it is one of the longest documented reigns of any European monarch.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini dominated the Roman art world of the seventeenth century, flourishing under the patronage of its cardinals and popes while also challenging contemporary artistic traditions. Forging a path for future artists, he played an instrumental role in establishing the dramatic and eloquent vocabulary of the Baroque style.
