The Shaw memorial in Boston is a remarkable high relief with an equestrian by Saint-Gaudens. It commemorates Colonel Robert Shaw (1837–1863) and the fifty-fourth Massachusetts Colored Regiment, the first unit in the Union Army in the Civil War made up of free black soldiers. Saint-Gaudens finalized this bronze sculpture in 1897, after 14 years of work.
- Sculptor(s):Saint-Gaudens, Augustus
(1848 –1907) was the Irish-born American sculptor of the Beaux-Arts generation who most embodied the ideals of the “American Renaissance”. Raised in New York City, he traveled to Europe for further training and artistic study, and then returned to major critical success in the design of monuments commemorating heroes of the American Civil War, many of which still stand.
