(1159–1189), a general of the Minamoto clan, joined the cloistered Emperor Go-Shirakawa after the Genpei War against his brother Yoritomo. Yoshitsune was betrayed, defeated and forced to commit harakiri (ritual suicide) along with his wife and daughter. He is considered one of the greatest and most popular warriors of his era, and one of the most famous samurai fighters in the history of Japan.

His statue in Komatsushima on the top of Mount Hata (at 6.7 metres, the tallest equestrian statue in Japan) shows Minamoto no Yoshitsune with his bow raised, on a rearing horse.
