Montevideo is an attractive city, combining the characteristics of a vast capital with the cosy atmosphere of a province town. For me it was paradise, with so many equestrian statues. A highlight was the unexpected meeting with a copy of the famous statue of Gattamelata by Donatello, with the somewhat puzzling text: adquirido en el ano 1963 emplazado al cumplirse los 600 anos del nacimiento del genial escultor. Donatello’s 600th birthday was in 1986, so why was this copy acquired 23 years earlier?
Anyway, this equestrian statue was the last thing I expected in Montevideo.
