Rosas, Juan Manuel de

(1793–1877), nicknamed ‘Restorer of the Laws’, was a politician and army officer, who ruled the Argentine Confederation almost uninterruptedly from 1829 until 1852. Rosas’ rule was marked by violence. He killed his opponents and anyone else who would not support him. Justo José de Urquiza defeated him in 1852 at the Battle of Caseros. De Rosas fled to live in exile for 20 years in England, where he died in Southampton.
