Description:
This impressive gilded bronze equestrian statue is located in the Grand Army Plaza. Alexander Phimister Proctor created the horse. Nike, the Goddess of Victory, leads Sherman into the battle and ultimately to peace; together they surge forward, cape, gown and horse’s tail billowing dramatically. A remarkable detail is the right rear hoof of the horse crushing a Georgia pine branch. With this work of art, St. Gaudens won the Grand Prix at the Paris Exposition in 1900.
