(1827–1894) was one of the youngest major generals in the Army of Georgia, who fought numerous major battles in the Eastern Theatre, in Georgia and the Carolinas. Controversy arose from his conduct at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he was accused of indecision and a dilatory advance on the battlefield, earning him the derogatory nickname ‘Slow Come’.

(1863 – 1937) was the best-known expatriate American sculptor of the Beaux-Arts school, as successful and lauded in France as he was in the United States. He was also a highly accomplished painter and portraitist. In 1880 young MacMonnies was taken on by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and soon promoted to studio assistant. This began a lifelong friendship with the acclaimed sculptor.
Controversy was aroused by his statue in Brooklyn, as men who had served under Slocum stated loud and clear that the statue showed no resemblance whatsoever to him.
