(1833–1864) was Major General of the Confederate Army. He was a cavalry commander known for his mastery of reconnaissance, being ‘the eyes and ears of the Confederate army’. Arguably Stuart’s most famous campaign, Gettysburg, was marred when a Union cavalry attack surprised him at the Battle of Brandy Station. His separation from Lee’s army for an extended period left Lee unaware of Union troop movements, and in this way contributed to the Confederate defeat in Gettysburg. Stuart was mortally wounded in the Battle of Yellow Tavern in 1864.
- Sculptor(s):Moynihan, Frederick
(1843 – 1910), born on the Isle of Guernsey, was an American sculptor.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in London before emigrating to the United States. He is best remembered for creating monuments commemorating the American Civil War.
