(c. 840–894) was a ruler of Great Moravia, which encompassed more or less the territory of modern-day Slovakia. This was the reason to present him as a ‘Slovak King’ in the period of Slovak national awakening. Not long after his death, Svatopluk’s realm of Great Moravia collapsed in the midst of a power struggle between his sons and as a result of the intensifying Hungarian raids.

Description:
In contrast with the neighbouring Czech Republic and Hungary, Slovakia never had its own dynasty. Most probably, Svatopluk was never even in Slovakian territory. As many Slovakians consider the statue a falsification of history, its erection by Slovakian nationalists caused due commotion.
