Washington, George

This statue of Washington was Henry Merwin Shrady’s first major public work. The memorial to Grant in Washington and the equestrian statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville would follow. The striking equestrian statue, in Brooklyn’s Continental Army Plaza, depicts the Commander in Chief during the difficult six-month period at Valley Forge. It portrays Washington in a contemplative pose, shrouded in a cloak.
