(1745–1796) adopted a military career at the outset of the war, where his military exploits and fierce personality quickly earned him a promotion to the rank of brigadier general and the sobriquet of ‘Mad Anthony’. The pinnacle of his service was the victory at Stony Point, where in 1779 his light infantry overcame British fortifications during a night-time, bayonets-only assault lasting just half an hour.
