Wenceslaus l

This (stone) equestrian statue of Wenceslaus I by the baroque artist Jan Jiří Bendl (1678) was originally erected as part of a fountain at the centre of Prague’s Horse Market (now Wenceslas Square). During the period of the Czech National Revival in the mid-nineteenth century, this ancient statue became a gathering place for those who longed for secession from Austria. In 1879, the statue was moved to its present location in the leafy grounds of Vyšehrad, a historical fort located in the city of Prague.
