1624–1662), also known as Koxinga, lived in Quanzhou (Fujian). As chief commander of the Ming troops on the maritime front, he devoted the last years of his life to resisting the conquest of China by the Manchus. On defeating the forces of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Taiwan in his last campaign, Koxinga took over the island from the Dutch, who had held it for 38 years. A large statue (38 metres high and 42 metres long) stands in the place where he lived.
